Looking to hire musicians? Allow us to introduce you to Toby Street, one of two trumpet players for Riverside Brass Quintet.

Toby was introduced to the instrument at the age of 8 by his father, going on to learn with Tim Haywood and Ray Allen. His first foray into group music began with Bromley Youth Music Trust wind bands and orchestras, from where he went on to become principal trumpet with the National Youth Wind Orchestra.

Having left Trinity School, Croydon in 2009, Toby went on to complete his Undergraduate degree at the Royal College of Music and a Postgraduate degree at the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied with Alistair Mackie, Paul Beniston, Mike Lovatt, Alan Thomas, Gareth Small, Mark David, Andy Crowley and Martin Shaw.

Toby is currently on trial for principal trumpet at the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and was also on trial for principal trumpet of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 2014. Toby has appeared as guest principal with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, London Concert Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the English Chamber Orchestra. He has also performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

Toby’s solo work includes performing Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto with Bromley Symphony Orchestra, appearing as a soloist on BBC Radio 3’s Morning Service and performing the Neruda Trumpet Concerto at the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar room. Toby’s commercial work includes performing on the West End Fringe show The Billie Holiday Story and the UK tour of Barnum. He has also performed with “The Hoosiers”, “Public Service Broadcasting”, “The Barr Brothers” and “To Kill a King”.

It is worth mentioning that Toby is a skilled arranger and has penned many unique interpretations of popular songs as well as national anthems, jazz standards and classical favourites especially for Riverside Brass Quintet. Some of these can be heard on our website, as well as on the quintet’s debut CD, Riverside’s Yuletide.

Aside from this, Toby has arranged a number of pieces for other brass quintets, dectets and jazz ensembles, including a Christmas carol for The Philharmonia Brass Quintet’s 2013 and 2014 Christmas e-card. He was also commissioned to arrange Kraftwerk’s Tour De France for brass quintet for the 2012 Exhibition Road Festival as part of the London Olympic Festival, as well as a version of White Christmas for Michael McIntyre’s Very Christmassy Christmas Show which aired on BBC 1 on Christmas Day, 2014.

Toby is a founding member of Riverside Brass Quintet and also regularly plays with Oompah Brass. He has also appeared with Septura Brass (a septet) and “Superbrass”, a brass dectet. Key highlights include performing Kurt Weill’s Threepenny Opera at Cadogan Hall and William Walton’s Façade at the Elgar Room.
